You connected your number to the WhatsApp Business API, typed your business name, and now WhatsApp Manager says the display name is Declined. Or it has said Pending review for days and you don’t know if customers can see it.
A rejected display name means Meta’s reviewers decided the name doesn’t meet its display name rules: usually it doesn’t clearly match your business, it is just a generic word or a person’s name, or it has symbols, slogans or trademark marks. Fix the name so it matches the brand on your website and documents, then submit it again from WhatsApp Manager. If you think the decision is wrong, Meta lets you appeal through Developer Support.
What the display name is, and why Meta reviews it
Every number on the WhatsApp Business API needs a display name when it is registered. Meta's display names documentation says the name appears on the number’s WhatsApp profile, and once it is approved through verification it can also show in chat threads and the chat list. (If a customer has saved you under another name, their own label wins on their phone.)
Because customers see this name, Meta checks it. According to Meta's help centre article on display names, a name review isn’t needed to get started on the platform, but once your business is verified, Meta starts the display name review for all numbers in your account, and every later change has to be approved before it is used. Meta’s developer page adds that the name is also verified automatically when your number moves to a higher messaging limit.
The statuses you’ll see
Open WhatsApp Manager → Account tools → Phone numbers and look at the Name column. The values come from Meta’s phone numbers reference:
| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Approved | The name passed review | Nothing. If you just changed it, the number must be re-registered (see below) |
| Available without review | You can use the name; it hasn’t been reviewed yet | Keep it consistent with your brand; review comes with verification or a higher limit |
| Pending review | A new or changed name is waiting for Meta | Wait. Don’t submit again; it doesn’t speed things up |
| Declined | Meta rejected the name | Edit the name to follow the rules, or appeal |
| Expired / None | No valid name certificate, so the number can’t be registered for the API | Submit a name and get it approved |
Meta’s developer pages don’t give a review time; Meta sends a notification in Meta Business Suite when the review is done. Don’t plan a campaign launch for the day you change your name.
Meta’s display name rules
The core rules come from two Meta sources: the display name guidelines in the Business Help Center and section 2.2 of the Meta Terms for WhatsApp Business Platform.
- It must relate to your business. The name should be your business, brand or product name, the one customers find on your website, shop board, invoices or social pages.
- It must be accurate. The Terms say the name must not be false, misleading, deceptive or defamatory, and must not parody anyone.
- No symbols, excessive punctuation or trademark marks. The Terms rule out “character symbols, excessive punctuation, or trademark designations”. So no ™, ®, emoji, stars or “!!!”.
- Not someone else’s brand. The name can’t infringe a trademark or anyone’s rights. A reseller can’t take the manufacturer’s brand as its own name.
- Not just a generic word, place or person. Meta’s guidelines reject a name made only of a generic term (“Fashion”), a general place (“Mumbai”) or a person’s full name.
- No slogans or long descriptions, no web address format, and at least three characters.
You may add to your brand name to make it clearer: a city or region (“Green Leaf Clinic Pune”), a department (“Green Leaf Clinic Support”). Write it the way your brand writes it, with normal capitalisation, not ALL CAPS unless that is genuinely how your brand is spelt everywhere.
| Submitted name | Likely result | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sarees | Declined | Generic word only |
| Rahul Sharma | Declined | A person’s name, not a business |
| Best Deals In Town!!! | Declined | Slogan plus excessive punctuation |
| Kalpana Sarees™ | Declined | Trademark designation |
| Kalpana Sarees | Likely approved | Brand name matching the shop and website |
| Kalpana Sarees Jaipur | Likely approved | Brand plus location |
Why your display name was rejected: the common causes
- No visible link to your business. The name doesn’t appear on your website, Facebook page, GST certificate or shop signage, so the reviewer can’t connect it to you. This is the most common one for small businesses that use a new brand name online.
- It doesn’t match your Meta business portfolio. The portfolio is “Sharma Traders Pvt Ltd” and the name is “Glow Beauty”, with nothing tying the two together. Add the brand to your website, or to the portfolio details, so the link is visible.
- A generic or descriptive name. “Home Bakery”, “Delhi Tours”, “Best Mobile Shop”.
- Symbols, emoji, slogans or marks.
- Someone else’s brand. “Samsung Service Centre” from an independent repair shop.
If your brand name differs from your legal name, make sure your website shows both, for example “Glow Beauty is a brand of Sharma Traders Pvt Ltd” in the footer. That one line solves many rejections, and it helps business verification too.
How to fix it and resubmit
From Meta's display names page:
- Choose a compliant name using the rules above. Check it appears, spelt the same way, on your website or other public pages.
- Open WhatsApp Manager → Account tools → Phone numbers, select the number, open the Profile tab and click Edit under Display name. (Developers can also send the new name through the API.)
- Submit and wait. The new name goes through verification again. Meta notifies you in Meta Business Suite when the review is done.
- Re-register the number after approval. Meta says a changed name takes effect only after the number is re-registered, which you or your provider must do within 14 days of approval. Re-registering before approval has no effect, and if the 14 days pass you have to submit the name again. You don’t need to go through the Facebook signup pop-up again.
Meta allows 10 display name changes in any 30-day period, so don’t use them up experimenting. If the number already has the Official Business Account badge, Meta says the name can only be changed through direct support.
If you think the rejection is wrong
Meta’s page gives two routes: edit the name to follow the guidelines, or appeal through Developer Support (or Enterprise Developer Support). If you connected through a provider, ask them to raise the appeal, and send them proof that the name is yours: your website, signboard photo, GST or trademark certificate.
What NOT to do
- Don’t resubmit the same name unchanged. You’ll get the same answer and use up one of your 10 changes.
- Don’t add a generic word to look different (“Kalpana Official”, “Kalpana Store India 2026”). Fix the link to your business instead.
- Don’t use a famous brand or a competitor’s name to get attention. It breaks the Terms and can lead to the account being reclaimed by the brand owner.
Related problems
- Error 131037. Meta's error reference returns this when the sending number (Meta’s 555 numbers in the error text) has no approved display name. The fix is the same: get a name approved.
- Business verification rejected. The display name review starts after verification, and both fail for the same reason: names that don’t match. See Meta business verification rejected.
- Green tick. An approved display name is one of the conditions for the Official Business Account badge, along with a verified business, two-step verification and 30 days on the platform. More in our green tick guide.
- More templates. A verified business with an approved display name can have up to 6,000 templates per account instead of 250. Template problems are covered in WhatsApp template rejected. New to the API? Start with how to get the WhatsApp Business API in India or using your existing number.
How WaBot handles this
You choose your display name in Meta’s own Facebook pop-up when you connect a number in WaBot (Settings → Meta Platforms → WhatsApp), and the review is Meta’s. WaBot then:
- Shows each number with its display name in the Meta Platforms table and in the inbox number list, so a team running several numbers can see which is which.
- Explains failed messages in plain words. If Meta refuses a message, for example with 131037 for a missing display name, the inbox shows what the code means and what to change.
- Helps when you’re stuck. Write to hello@wabot.shop or WhatsApp +91 91889 12767 with the rejected name and your website, and we’ll tell you what to change before you resubmit.
WaBot can’t approve a name or speed up Meta’s review. The Free plan lets you sign up and connect a number; Starter (₹840/month + GST) adds the shared inbox and campaigns, and the Base Plan (₹9,240/year + GST) adds workflows. Meta’s message charges are billed by Meta directly.
Connect your number with the right name, first time
Create your free WaBot account and connect your number through Meta's own pop-up. The inbox shows each number with its display name and explains Meta's errors in plain words. Connecting starts a 15-day Base Plan trial, no card needed.
Frequently asked questions
Why was my WhatsApp display name rejected?
Usually because Meta couldn’t link the name to your business (it isn’t on your website or documents), or because it is only a generic word, a place or a person’s name, or includes symbols, slogans or trademark marks. Fix the name and submit it again in WhatsApp Manager.
How long does WhatsApp display name review take?
Meta’s developer documentation doesn’t state a review time. You get a notification in Meta Business Suite when it is done, and the status in WhatsApp Manager changes from Pending review to Approved or Declined.
Can I still send messages while my display name is pending?
Often yes: Meta says a name review isn’t required to get started, and a name can be ‘available without review’. A changed name, however, only takes effect after it is approved and the number is re-registered.
How many times can I change my WhatsApp Business display name?
Meta allows 10 display name changes in a 30-day period. After a change is approved, the number has to be re-registered within 14 days, or the name must be submitted again.
Does an approved display name give me the green tick?
No. An approved name is one condition for the Official Business Account badge. You also need a verified business, two-step verification, 30 days on the platform, and Meta’s approval of a separate request.
The short version
A display name is approved when a stranger can look at it and find your business behind it. Use the brand name your customers already see, with no symbols or slogans, make sure your website shows it, and resubmit once with that fixed. If you’re sure the name is right, appeal through Developer Support instead of guessing.
