You’ve decided the WhatsApp Business app isn’t enough: the whole team needs one number, you want to send offers to more than 256 people, or your developer asked for “the API”. Now you’re searching how to get WhatsApp Business API access and finding application forms, agencies and quotes.
The direct answer: there is no application form any more. You get the WhatsApp Business API by connecting a phone number to Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform, usually through a provider such as WaBot, in a Facebook pop-up that takes about 10 minutes. You need a Meta business portfolio (Business Manager), a phone number that isn’t on the WhatsApp app (or one you’re willing to move) and a display name. Business verification comes later and only matters once you want to message more than 250 customers a day. The cost is Meta’s per-message charge plus your provider’s plan.
What you actually get: a number on Meta’s platform
The WhatsApp Business API has no app of its own. Meta runs the platform; a provider adds the inbox, templates and campaigns, and your team replies from there. Meta’s account structure has three layers: your business portfolio (what most people still call Business Manager), a WhatsApp account that holds one phone number, and a Messaging account (the old “WABA”) that holds templates and billing. You’ll meet all three in the pop-up. Still deciding? Read WhatsApp Business app vs API first.
What you need before you start
| What | Why | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| A Facebook login that is an admin of a business portfolio | The pop-up asks you to choose or create the portfolio that will own the number | business.facebook.com, free. Create it in the company’s name |
| A phone number you own that can receive an SMS or call | Meta verifies it with a code. Meta’s rules: a number already on WhatsApp can’t be registered unless it’s deleted first | Mobile recommended; landline and toll-free work with a voice-call code |
| A display name | Required at registration; customers see it, and Meta reviews it | Your brand name as on your website or shop board |
| Business documents (for verification, later) | To lift the 250-customers-a-day start limit and the two-number cap | GST, incorporation or Udyam certificate, plus a utility bill or bank statement for the address |
| A provider, or a developer | The API alone is just endpoints; a provider adds the inbox, templates and campaigns | WaBot’s Free plan: sign up and connect a number |
A website isn’t required to connect; it helps with business verification, where Meta asks for your website or business email. This list replaces our 2024 post on requirements to apply for the WhatsApp Business API, written when providers still handled applications by hand.
Your phone number: three situations
A new number, or one never used on WhatsApp
The simplest case. Buy a SIM in the business’s name, keep that phone nearby for the code, and connect.
A number already on the WhatsApp Business app
Meta’s migration guide gives you two options:
- Keep the app and add the API. Onboard through a provider that supports WhatsApp Business app onboarding (Meta calls it coexistence): you keep the app for one-to-one chats, your history is preserved, and the provider’s inbox works on the same number. In WaBot this is the Connect Business App button. Trade-offs from Meta’s coexistence page: app version 2.24.17 or newer, broadcast lists in the app become read-only, groups and calls stay in the app, and the number is limited to 20 messages per second. Contacts and up to 180 days of one-to-one chats can be synced into the inbox once, within 24 hours of connecting.
- Move the number fully. Back up your chats, then delete the account in the app (Settings → Account → Delete my account). Meta says the number becomes available within about 3 minutes. The history is gone, and the number can’t go back to the app unless you deregister it from the API.
A number on the personal WhatsApp app
Meta’s guide offers only the second route: delete the WhatsApp Messenger account first, and the history is lost. For most businesses a separate number is the better answer.
During registration you set a 6-digit two-step verification PIN. Write it down. Meta asks for it when you change the PIN or move the number later.
Step by step: get the API through WaBot (about 10 minutes)
WaBot connects numbers through Meta’s Embedded Signup, the same Facebook pop-up every official provider uses. The steps follow the connect WhatsApp guide in the WaBot docs.
- Create a free WaBot account. Email and password, then your business name, what it does and your business phone number. No card.
- Open Settings → Meta Platforms → WhatsApp and click Connect Whatsapp Business (or Connect Business App to keep using the app). The buttons appear in Live Mode.
- Read the policy notes, tick I read and understand the terms above, and click Continue.
- Work through the Facebook window. Log in, choose or create your business portfolio and WhatsApp Business Account, enter the number, type the code Meta sends by SMS or call, and enter your display name.
- See “Congratulations! You Have Successfully Onboarded”, then reload. Your number appears in the table. Check that Subscription says Subscribed (else click Subscribe Now) and Registration says Registered (else click Register Now and set the 6-digit PIN).
- Add a payment method with Meta. Meta bills message charges to your own account, not to WaBot. Its Embedded Signup documentation says businesses onboarded through a tech provider must add a payment method to their Messaging account before they can message; you do this in WhatsApp Manager.
- Create your first template under Settings → Templates → Add Templates, wait for Approved (often minutes; Meta says up to 24 hours) and send it.
Connecting a number starts a 15-day trial of the Base Plan, so you can try the inbox, campaigns and workflows before choosing a plan. Prefer no provider? Meta’s Cloud API get-started guide walks a developer through creating a Meta app, a test number, an access token and a webhook. Right if you’re building your own system; not a shortcut for a shop that wants an inbox.
Business verification: when you need it, how long it takes
You don’t need it to connect or to start messaging. You need it when you hit one of these walls, from Meta’s messaging limits and business accounts pages:
- More than 250 customers a day. A new portfolio can start conversations with 250 unique customers in 24 hours. Verifying is one of three paths to 2,000 (the others: your partner verifies you, or you send 2,000 delivered high-quality template messages in 30 days). Above 2,000 the limit rises on its own. See how to increase your WhatsApp messaging limit.
- More than two phone numbers. Verification, or reaching the 2,000 limit, raises the cap to 20.
- More than 250 templates. A verified portfolio with an approved display name gets 6,000.
- The official badge (the “green tick”), which also needs 30 days on the platform. See how the WhatsApp green tick works.
Verification happens in Meta Business Suite under Settings → Security Center, not in WaBot: legal name, address, phone, website or business email, then documents showing the same name and address. Meta’s help centre doesn’t promise a review time; expect days, not minutes, and longer if the documents don’t match the portfolio details, because that means a rejection and a fresh submission. Step by step: how to verify your Facebook business.
Display name rules, in short
Meta reviews the name against its WhatsApp Business display name guidelines. Use the brand name customers already know, consistent with your website. Names made only of a generic word (“Fashion”), a city or a person’s full name, and names under three characters, are rejected. You may add a region, a department (“Support”) or “Test”. A changed name is reviewed again, so don’t start with a temporary one.
What it costs in 2026
Two bills, from two companies. Meta charges per delivered message, by category, at its published rates; your provider charges for its software. Meta’s rates for Indian numbers from 1 October 2026, excluding 18% GST:
| Message type | Examples | Meta’s rate |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing | Offers, festive greetings, new arrivals | ₹0.8631 |
| Utility | Order confirmations, reminders, receipts | ₹0.115 |
| Authentication | One-time passwords | ₹0.115 |
| Service (replies within 24 hours of a customer’s message) | Answering enquiries | First 1,000 free each month, then ₹0.115 |
WaBot’s plans: Free (sign up and connect your number), Starter at ₹840/month + GST (shared inbox and campaigns) and the Base Plan at ₹9,240/year + GST (adds workflows). Meta bills its charges directly, with no WaBot markup: a clinic sending 800 reminders and answering 600 patients a month pays Meta about ₹92 plus GST. How long each step takes
| Step | Typical time | Who controls it |
|---|---|---|
| Create a WaBot account | 2 minutes | You |
| Connect the number in the Facebook pop-up | About 10 minutes | You, with Meta’s code |
| First template approved | Often minutes; Meta says up to 24 hours | Meta |
| Business verification | Days; longer if documents are sent back | Meta |
| Messaging limit 250 → 2,000 | Immediately after verification is approved | Meta |
| Official badge request | After 30 days on the platform, if eligible | Meta |
How WaBot handles this
The Facebook pop-up runs inside WaBot, and Connect Business App lets a shop keep its WhatsApp Business app while the team works from the shared inbox. Once connected, the inbox shows your number’s messaging tier (for example “Tier 250”) and quality, and Test Mode lets you try templates and bots with up to 3 test numbers first. If anything in the pop-up fails, write to hello@wabot.shop or WhatsApp +91 91889 12767.
Connect your WhatsApp Business API number in 10 minutes
Create your free WaBot account, open Settings → Meta Platforms and connect your number through Meta's own Facebook pop-up. Connecting starts 15 days of the Base Plan, no card needed.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an application form for the WhatsApp Business API?
No. You connect a phone number to Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform through a provider’s Facebook pop-up (Embedded Signup), or by creating a Meta developer app yourself. Meta verifies the number with an SMS or call code during the process.
How long does it take to get WhatsApp Business API access in India?
Connecting a number takes about 10 minutes and you can message the same day. Business verification, needed to message more than 250 customers a day, is a separate Meta review that takes days rather than minutes.
Can I use my existing WhatsApp Business app number for the API?
Yes. Keep the app and connect it through a provider that supports WhatsApp Business app onboarding, which preserves your history, or delete the account in the app and register the number fresh, which loses the chats.
What does the WhatsApp Business API cost in India?
Meta charges per delivered message: ₹0.8631 for marketing, ₹0.115 for utility and authentication, and ₹0.115 for replies after the first 1,000 free each month, plus 18% GST. WaBot has a Free plan, Starter at ₹840/month + GST and a Base Plan at ₹9,240/year + GST.
Do I need Facebook business verification to use the API?
Not to connect or start messaging. You need it to go past 250 new customers a day, to register more than two numbers, and as one condition for the official business badge.
The bottom line
Getting the WhatsApp Business API in 2026 is a 10-minute pop-up, not a paperwork exercise, and nobody should charge you to “apply”. Create a business portfolio, pick the right number for your situation, use your real brand name, and connect. Do business verification the same week so the 250 limit never gets in your way.
Then the real work starts: templates, a shared inbox and replies inside the 24-hour window, where the first 1,000 messages a month are free.
