Your customers already have your WhatsApp number. It’s on your shop board, your visiting cards and years of chats. Now you want the WhatsApp Business API for a shared team inbox, campaigns or automation, and you’re worried you’ll need a new number or lose every conversation.
You can use your existing number. If it is on the WhatsApp Business app, you can keep using the app and connect the same number to the API through a provider that supports Meta’s Business app onboarding (often called coexistence); your recent chats and contacts can come along. Meta added support for Indian numbers in May 2025. The other route is to delete the WhatsApp account on the phone and register the number on the API fresh, which loses the chat history. A personal WhatsApp number can only take that second route.
Your three options at a glance
| Option | Chat history | Keep using the phone app? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Connect the Business app number (coexistence) | Up to 180 days of one-to-one chats, plus contacts, synced once | Yes, the app and the API work side by side | Shops that want the team inbox but still chat from the phone |
| Delete the app account, register on the API | Lost (back up first) | No, not unless you later remove the number from the API | Businesses moving fully to the API |
| Use a new number for the API | Old number untouched | Yes, on the old number | Keeping personal and business separate, or testing first |
The rules come from Meta’s guide to using an existing WhatsApp number and its Business app onboarding documentation. Still deciding between the two products? Read WhatsApp Business app vs API.
Option 1: keep the app and add the API (coexistence)
Meta’s changelog records that from 5 May 2025, providers can onboard WhatsApp Business app users with an Indian (+91) number. Here is what Meta’s onboarding documentation says changes.
What you need
- The WhatsApp Business app (not personal WhatsApp), version 2.24.17 or newer.
- A provider that supports Business app onboarding. You complete Meta’s Facebook pop-up and confirm on your phone.
- Your phone with the app open during the sync. Meta advises keeping the app open while history comes across.
What comes across to the API inbox
- Contacts with a WhatsApp number, and later additions and edits.
- One-to-one chat history from the last 180 days. Group chats are not included, and media is only available for roughly the last 14 days.
- One chance, within 24 hours. Meta allows each sync once, and the provider must request it within 24 hours of onboarding. Miss it and you have to disconnect and onboard again.
What changes in the app
- Messages mirror both ways. What you send from the phone shows in the API inbox and vice versa.
- Broadcast lists become read-only; you can’t create new ones. Send campaigns from the API instead.
- Disappearing messages, view-once and live location are turned off in one-to-one chats.
- Some things stay app-only: voice and video calls, groups, catalog, status, labels, greeting and away messages, and quick replies don’t run through the API.
- Linked devices are unlinked when you connect; you can link up to four again afterwards (WhatsApp for Windows and WearOS aren’t supported as companions).
- Speed limit: a shared number sends at a fixed 20 messages per second. Plenty for most small businesses.
What it costs
Meta says messages you send from the app stay free. Messages sent through the API are charged at API rates: in India from 1 October 2026, ₹0.8631 per marketing message and ₹0.115 per utility or authentication message, plus 18% GST, billed by Meta directly. Replies within 24 hours of a customer’s message: the first 1,000 a month are free, then ₹0.115. One detail: messages customers sent you just before you connected don’t open an API 24-hour window, so replying to them from the API needs a template. Open the WhatsApp Business app on the phone regularly. Meta’s systems flag a coexistence number whose main phone has been inactive for about 14 days.
To stop, disconnect from the phone: Settings → Account → Business Platform → Disconnect Account. The app carries on as before.
Option 2: delete the app account and register the number on the API
This is the only option for a personal WhatsApp number, and an option for Business app numbers. From Meta's guide:
- Back up your chats using WhatsApp’s chat backup (Meta links the Android and iPhone guides). The history will not move to the API.
- In the app, go to Settings → Account → Delete my account and follow the prompts.
- Wait a few minutes. Meta says the number can take up to 3 minutes to become available. If you try too soon, registration fails with error 133015 (“recently deleted”); Meta’s fix is to wait 5 minutes and retry.
- Connect the number to the API through your provider’s Facebook pop-up and enter the code Meta sends.
After this, the number can’t be used in the WhatsApp app again unless it is removed from the API. Meta adds that a number which sent paid messages in the last 30 days can’t be deleted from the platform, so moving back isn’t instant.
The verification code (OTP) and the two-step PIN
- OTP. Meta sends a code by SMS or voice call during registration. Meta's phone number rules: the number must be yours, able to receive SMS or calls, with country and area code. Landlines work with the voice call; short codes and numbers behind an IVR that can’t receive the call don’t. Keep the phone (or the person who answers the landline) next to you.
- A banned number must be unbanned first through Meta’s appeal process before it can be registered. See WhatsApp Business account banned.
- Two-step PIN. Registration asks for a 6-digit PIN, and Meta’s two-step verification page says you need it to change the PIN or delete the number later. Write it down. If you forget it, change it in WhatsApp Manager. Meta is gradually removing this PIN for eligible Cloud API numbers, so you may not see it at all.
- Errors to recognise from Meta's error reference: 133005 (wrong PIN), 133015 (number recently deleted, wait and retry) and 133016 (too many registration attempts; the number is blocked for a while).
What NOT to do
- Don’t delete the app account to get the API if you want your chats. Use Business app onboarding instead.
- Don’t use a personal WhatsApp number you also use for family. It has to be deleted from personal WhatsApp to go on the API.
- Don’t skip the 24-hour sync window if you went the coexistence route. There’s no second try without reconnecting.
- Don’t try registration repeatedly when a code doesn’t arrive. Too many attempts block the number (133016).
- Don’t pick a temporary display name. Meta reviews the name, and changes are reviewed again. See WhatsApp display name rejected.
How WaBot handles this
Both routes start in Settings → Meta Platforms → WhatsApp: Connect Whatsapp Business for a new or freed-up number, or Connect Business App to keep your WhatsApp Business app. For the full step list see how to get the WhatsApp Business API in India. For a Business app number, WaBot:
- Syncs your contacts and history with Synchronize Contacts and Synchronize History in the number’s menu, and shows the progress in the Business App Sync column. It warns you if Meta’s 24-hour window has passed.
- Shows replies you send from the phone in the shared inbox, so the team sees the whole conversation.
- Puts the team on one number: shared inbox, assignment, campaigns from Starter (₹840/month + GST), workflows on the Base Plan (₹9,240/year + GST).
Meta’s message charges are billed by Meta directly, with no WaBot markup. Need help choosing a route? WhatsApp +91 91889 12767 or hello@wabot.shop.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use my existing WhatsApp number for the Business API?
Yes. A WhatsApp Business app number can be connected to the API while you keep using the app (coexistence), with up to 180 days of chats synced. Any number, including a personal WhatsApp number, can also be registered after you delete its WhatsApp account, but that loses the chat history.
Will I lose my WhatsApp chats if I move to the API?
Not if you use Business app onboarding: contacts and one-to-one chats from the last 180 days can be synced once, within 24 hours of connecting. If you delete the account and register fresh, the history is lost, so back it up first.
Is WhatsApp coexistence available in India?
Yes. Meta’s changelog says providers can onboard WhatsApp Business app users with an Indian country code from 5 May 2025. You need WhatsApp Business app version 2.24.17 or newer.
Can I use the WhatsApp Business app and API on the same number?
Yes, with coexistence. Messages mirror between the phone and the API inbox. Broadcast lists become read-only, groups and calls stay in the app, and the number sends at up to 20 messages per second.
Can I move my number back to the WhatsApp app later?
With coexistence you never left it; disconnect from Settings → Account → Business Platform. If you deleted and re-registered, the number must first be removed from the API, which Meta blocks if it sent paid messages in the last 30 days.
The bottom line
Your existing number can go on the WhatsApp Business API. If it’s on the Business app, connect it with coexistence and keep both the app and your recent chats. If it’s on personal WhatsApp, or you want a clean move, back up, delete the account and register it. Either way, sync within 24 hours, keep the PIN safe, and don’t hammer the registration button.
